The TYPO3 Localization Team made significant strides in 2024, enhancing the multilingual capabilities of the TYPO3 content management system. The dedicated group of volunteers worked tirelessly to improve translation tools, expand language support, and foster community engagement, ultimately making TYPO3 more accessible to users worldwide.

Community Sprint Participation

In November 2024, four team members attended the TYPO3 community sprint in Düsseldorf, Germany. This event proved to be a major success for team cohesion and productivity. During the sprint, the team achieved several important goals:

Extension and Tool Improvements

The team made significant progress enhancing translation tools:

Community Outreach and Engagement

The team actively participated in TYPO3 events to promote localization efforts:

  • Peter Kraume represented the Localization Team at TYPO3camp Switzerland (18–20 April) and TYPO3camp Vienna (11–13 October), presenting the team's work and fostering connections with translators from various countries.
  • We launched an initiative to translate TYPO3 into as many languages as possible before the release of TYPO3 v13 in October.
  • The team supported new translators, such as Martin Pribyl from the Czech Republic.
  • We added Crowdin support for new languages: Albanian, Hebrew, and Tok-Pisin.

Challenges and Solutions

The team faced a significant challenge with the temporary departure of three members and the parental leave of co-team leader Abdulhamid Kwieder until summer 2025. However, we adapted by welcoming guests to team meetings, potentially leading to new permanent members.

Statistical Highlights

The team's efforts resulted in impressive growth in our Crowdin Project:

  • Translated words increased by approximately 11% to 120,000
  • Approved words saw a remarkable 151% increase to 140,000
  • Active members grew by 22% to 94

Looking Ahead: Goals for 2025

The TYPO3 Localization Team has set the following ambitious targets for the coming year:

  • Maintain the strong team spirit and positive momentum.
  • Initiate regular online meetings with Crowdin translators and proofreaders to foster a vibrant community.
  • Participate in another TYPO3 community sprint to continue collaborative efforts.

The TYPO3 Localization Team's work in 2024 has been instrumental in making TYPO3 more accessible to a global audience. By improving translation tools, expanding language support, and fostering community engagement, the team has significantly contributed to TYPO3's international appeal.

The TYPO3 project extends its heartfelt gratitude to Crowdin, a Ukrainian-founded cloud-based localization technology company, for offering their software as a service free of charge to FOSS projects like TYPO3, enabling us to efficiently manage and translate our software into multiple languages.
