Translations also go official!

Official documentation has become more structured in recent times. It is now time to apply more care to the translations too.

There exists a number of translations - in a variety of languages - of some of the official manuals. These translations haven't been really managed. They just happened, thanks to some volunteers. Most are as outdated as the original manual they are based on. Also there never was a defined team working on a given manual, which didn't help for their maintenance.

Now that the official documentation has got a better structure, namely an improved SVN repository structure and dedicated teams for each manual, the same improvements should be applied to translations. The point is to build a team of recognized translators for each manual and each language. Of course people may work on several manuals. The translations would go through the same peer-review process as the official documentation, albeit in their respective languages. This should ensure quality and continuity of translations.

If you are willing to translate one or more official manuals into your native language, please register yourself with the corresponding sub-projects on Forge. When applying for membership, please specify the language you want to translate the manual in. Go to one of the sub-project, log in and click on the "Join project" link at the bottom of the Members list.

It is advised to also subscribe to the documentation mailing list, because that's where information about the documentation and its evolution are exchanged.

The manuals for which we most dearly want translations are:

  • Getting Started
  • TypoScript in 45 minutes
  • Installation and Upgrade Guide

Of course you should feel free to translate any of the existing manuals, but it does not make sense to work on manuals which are out of date (refer to the overview of all official manuals and their status).

We are looking forward to receiving your help. Translating the official TYPO3 documentation into more languages will help increase TYPO3's reach.
