Neos splits of from the TYPO3 community, release of TYPO3 CMS 7.3, new TYPO3 Agency meetups and events: T3CON15 and T3CON15ASIA
The Week ending June 21, 2015 Last month the split of Neos from the TYPO3 community became evident with the official announcement '<link http: typo3.org news article typo3-project-focuses-on-typo3-cms-neos-to-start-its-own-community>TYPO3 project focuses on TYPO3 CMS, Neos to start its own community'. Many things have been said in the past and are still being said about the split. After years of uncertainty about the product situation further development of TYPO3 CMS is rocketing this year and confidence in the product, that so many freelancers and companies alike depend on, has been re-instated. The TYPO3 Association has reevaluated its position and is reaching out to companies for feedback and support with the current development of TYPO3 CMS. In the previous years there was a lot of dedicated work on Neos development. Community development however stalled and wider acceptance and support remained behind. With the split focus is being regained by both products and the Neos project is working hard on growing their community. Ties between both projects are strong and we also should not forget the features that have been backported to TYPO3 CMS and were of benefit to development. There are still a number of opportunities for cooperation, which I am looking forward to. Currently ongoing is <link http: typo3.org news article member-poll-regarding-the-neos-split>a members poll querying the members what should be done with the remains of the three budgets that are related to Neos and about the license change that was proposed by the Neos team. This poll will run until June 30, 2015. <link http: blog.ulr-ich.ch post when-you-participate-in-the-t3a-neos-split-voting>Lorenz Ulrich gives feedback on the situation on his blog and advises to vote wisely. "Even if it’s sad that the split is the necessary consequence of the current situation, I think it’s best for both products." Lorenz mentions the development that flowed back into TYPO3 CMS from the Flow project and that both products and communities wouldn’t be as great as they are today if it were not for all the people involved...

CertiFunication

As a new type of event, the "<link http: typo3.org certification alumni-certifuncation-day>TYPO3 Alumni #CertiFUNcation Day" was held at the Phantasialand near Cologne, Germany on June 5th, 2015. Current and upcoming TYPO3 Certified Integrators could be certified for the current TYPO3 6.2 LTS version and re-certification. The TYPO3 Education Committee shared their expertise and organized a great mixture between knowledge exchange, interesting presentations about 6.2 migration and the future with CMS 7, and fun within the Phantasialand later in the evening.
Pic by Nicki Uhlbach (<link http: www.flickr.com photos>www.flickr.com/photos/22621002@N08/) The day revolved around 7 workshop sessions, certification and fun. Marcus Schwemer reports on his <link http: typo3worx.eu>blog about the <link http: typo3worx.eu awesome-typo3-certifuncation-some-like-it-hot>Awesome TYPO3 CertiFUNcation Day. From the article: The seven sessions:
  • Session 1: “What’s new in TYPO3 6.2?”
Patrick Lobacher (<link http: twitter.com patricklobacher>@PatrickLobacher) showed us the central parts that changed between TYPO3 4.5 and 6.2.
  • Session 2: “Securing TYPO3?
Helmut Hummel (<link http: twitter.com helhum>@helhum) presented a diary of a website hack.
  • Session 3: “Smooth Migration 4.5 to 6.2?
As migrating from TYPO3 4.5 to 6.2 is a big topic in the  TYPO3 community, Jürgen Godon (<link http: twitter.com eagen46>@eagen46) gave us a lot of insights on the different parts.
  • Session 4: “TYPO3 Themes”
Jo Hasenau (<link http: twitter.com bunnyfield>@bunnyfield) gave us a lot of insights on how to bring theming within TYPO3 to the next level using the cascade of the “theme*” extensions.
  • Session 5: “The Future of TYPO3 CMS”
As the product owner of TYPO3 CMS, Matthias Schreiber (<link http: twitter.com mattlefaux>@mattLefaux) presented the expected changes in TYPO3 7 (LTS).
  • Session 6: TYPO3 Certified Integrator Preparation Workshop
In parallel to the future workshop Peter Pröll (<link http: twitter.com alinbu>@alinbu) prepared the participants for the certification in the next slot.
  • Session 7: The TYPO3 Certified Integrator Exam
The last slot of this day was reserved for the official paper based certification.
After the sessions the group could relax and have fun in a not so crowded Phantasialand under pretty warm conditions. As an extra treat the park was open for one whole hour after closing for the certiFUNcation group to enjoy the Black Mamba, one of the most challenging roller coasters in Europe without any queue. A special shout out goes to Nicky Uhlbach and Boris Hinzer of the TYPO3 education team. Thanks for this great idea. It is a great way to certify and build community.

Release of TYPO3 CMS 7.3

The community released the new and updated TYPO3 CMS 7.3  in full swing. The tempo is high and significant improvements keep rolling out. This particular release is labeled under the term "<link http: typo3.org news article announcing-typo3-cms-73-more-stability-more-control>More stability, more control" and it streamlines a lot of editing features under the hood as well as performance and stability improvements in package management. Along with the release fresh and updated  '<link http: typo3.org download release-notes whats-new>What's New Slides' are also published. Ready in 5 different languages and 3 in progress as I write this. With the great support of Michael Schams and Patrick Lobacher an easy to use translating pipeline is available for anyone that wants to support the TYPO3 community in any way. Writing documentation is THE way to support building your community. So if you are not a coder, this is definitely a way to contribute. Contact either Michael or Patrick to get informed on how you can translate the '<link http: typo3.org download release-notes whats-new>What's New Slides' in your language. For the 7.3 release topics were addressed that simplify the code base and make it easier to maintain, while providing new standards for setting up new projects made with TYPO3. The package manager that was backported from Flow was slimmed down, the Fluid template engine leading to significant performance improvements in Extbase extensions. Both fluid and Extbase are backported from the Flow PHP framework. The main form-based editing was modernized and more flexible Fluid templates are provided. A first step to inline backend editing was taken giving a glimpse of what is to come in this area. The next release is planned for August 4th, 2015, with a final LTS version to be released in fall 2015.

French Community / Code Sprint

The team is actively working on the next version during this week, while having also connected to the French community. A code sprint took place the last few days in Paris at SMILE where active contributors and first-timers met in real time to get bugs fixed and new ideas developed. Additionally the annual T3UNI meetup in Annecy, France will take place, from June 30 - July 2. Mathias Schreiber will give insight in the current development and how the French community can take part in the process.

TYPO3camp Stuttgart (May 8 - 10)

The wonderful location of Schloß Hohenheim was background for the fifth <link https: t3cs.de>TYPO3camp Stuttgart. This is one of the most popular camps with 200 attendants. The camp was fully sold out in 2 hours. Worth noting is that there is a new website that is new and responsive and based on TYPO3 7.2. The camp was made possible by the premium sponsors (Uni Hohenheim, jweiland.net, andersundsehr, Schommer Media, Lightwerk and Spooner Web) Stefan Galinski <link http: www.sgalinski.de news typo3camp-stuttgart-2015.html>writes about the TYPO3camp Stuttgart 2015 that many people were already present at the warm-up party that is typical for a barcamp style event. On the Saturday start everyone of the 200 people introduced themselves in 5 seconds. The Saturday was all about sessions from continuous delivery to TYPO3 themes. The most remarkable thing for this event always seems to be the great location, view and the good food. For the evening party Javier introduces the  "Spanish Survival Guide". One of the main things for the Sunday was a CMS comparison by Gernot Schulmeister of Drupal, Contao, Joomla, Wordpress, TYPO3 CMS and Neos based on a Hotel-Website.  It is to no surprise that TYPO3 scores great in a lot of categories. TYPO3 Association

In a <link http: opensource.com business typo3-agency-meetup-days>featured article on <link https: opensource.com>opensource.com Alain Veuve writes on the importance of the TYPO3 Agency meetups and what value they had for the community, business and technology. Such a meetup is a great possibility to meet and share insights in areas such as the market, business, recruiting, and management. One other important aspect is that these meetings helped re-energize many people to participate in the community again. The marketing team has now finished the preparation and schedule for the 2015 Agency Meetup Days. The event again is free of charge for the attendees, soft-drinks and lunch is included. <link http: typo3.org news article register-now-for-your-2015-typo3-agency-meetup>Register now for an event in your area.
