Joining the Motivation Research Team

This is your quest to join the Motivation Research Team. Enjoy your first steps in this big adventure!

Your quest

1. Check for yourself that you fulfill the most important requirements

  • You have read and accept the TYPO3 code of conduct.
  • You enjoy playing (some) games.
  • You are interested in becoming an expert in motivation psychology and gamification.
  • You are willing and able to invest at least 4 hours per month into work for the team (in almost every month).
  • You don't have any problems working in a team with the current team members.
  •  You think our team culture will work for you:
    • We are a very friendly team that strives to have a high degree of psychological safety. We help each other, go out of our way to treat each other well, and spend some social time together. We are also a high-performance team: We expect each team member to invest some time each month, and we hold each other accountable for sticking to our promises and agreements. Also, all team members are expected to reliably attend our monthly team calls.
    • We are still setting up some of our structures - so some things are still a work in progress.
    • The team is led in a very lateral way: We have a strong leadership that relies on all team members contributing to organizing our team, sharing many leadership tasks, and improving our structures.

2. Check some things on the team page

Read the team page and check that you

  • are willing to contribute to furthering the team's mission
  • accept the team rules

3. Ask your questions (if you have any)

If you have any questions, contact the team lead or co-team lead to have a call to answer your questions. The contact email of the team lead and co-lead are listed on the team page. You can also ask in the team's Slack channel.

4. Email the team leads

If you don't have any more questions, email the team lead and co-lead that you'd like to join the team, and include these things in your email:

  • that you are willing to invest at least 4 hours (almost) each month to further the team's mission
  • that you accept the team rules
  • list 3 games (computer games, parlor games, tabletop games …) or gamified apps/activities that you enjoy, and why you enjoy them.
  • whether you have any prior training or experience in psychology, gamification, game design or leading teams (nothing of this is required, but it helps)
  • where you'd like to apply the things you learn in this team and the tools the team creates

5. Hear back from the team

The team leads then will check if all current team members are fine with you joining a team call, or if there are any objections. You will get a reply within 7 days (usually a lot faster).

6. Join a team call

The team leads will provide you with the date and credentials for your first team call. This will provide an opportunity for the team members and you to get to know each other a bit, and for you to get a first live impression of our team culture.

After the call, you decide if you really want to join the team, and the team decides if anyone has any objections to you joining the team.

7. Officially join the team

If no team member has any objections and you still want to join the team, then the guild welcomes you as a new hero into their ranks (i.e., you have become a member of the team). Congratulations!

8. Continue your journey

You then attend the team calls and play the main quest line: a series of quests that will onboard you into the team, grow to become a team member, and learn the basics of motivational psychology.

The team leader also assigns you an ally (the hero with whom you play through the main quest line, and who will be your main point of mutual support) and a mentor (someone who has been a team member for at least a few months, and who will meet you for a call to explain how things work, and how we are organized).
