TYPO3 Trademark Usage: What’s Allowed and What’s Not

Clear guidelines to support your TYPO3 activities — and protect the brand we all share

The TYPO3 name is more than a label — it represents a global open-source community, a rock-solid CMS, and decades of shared innovation. As the TYPO3 ecosystem continues to grow, we want to make sure everyone uses the TYPO3 name respectfully and correctly — in ways that reflect well on all of us.

Here’s a simple, updated overview of what you can do, what’s only for TYPO3 Association members, and what’s not allowed at all.

What you can do — no membership required

You’re free to describe your services, experience, or products using the word “TYPO3”, as long as:

  • You’re speaking factually
  • You’re not claiming endorsement or pretending to be official
  • You’re not using “TYPO3” as your brand name

Examples that are perfectly fine:

  • ✔ “We offer TYPO3 development services.”
  • ✔ “10+ years of experience with TYPO3.”
  • ✔ “Our team builds government websites using TYPO3.”
  • ✔ “This tutorial is for TYPO3 integrators.”

No membership required — we encourage this kind of open, descriptive use.

What you can’t do — even if you’re a member of the TYPO3 Association

To protect the TYPO3 trademark, the following is not allowed for anyone (not even Gold or Platinum members):

  • Use “TYPO3” in your company name, product name, or domain
    • Examples: TYPO3Experts.com, TYPO3 Cloud Hosting, TYPO3 Toolkit
  • Use “TYPO3” in your social media handles or page titles
    • Examples: @TYPO3HostingNL, TYPO3 Services Berlin, TYPO3 Plugin Studio
  • Use “TYPO3” in ways that discredit the CMS or spread misleading information
    • Examples: Ads or articles like “TYPO3 is broken — switch to X”, or “Don’t use TYPO3”

If you’ve done any of the above unintentionally, no worries — just adjust and move forward. We’re here to help clarify what’s OK.

What’s reserved for Gold & Platinum members and TYPO3 partners

To support our ecosystem’s sustainability, some rights are only available to TYPO3 Association members at the Gold level or higher or TYPO3 Company Partners. Those may:

  • ✔ Use the TYPO3 logo (shield icon) in printed marketing materials
  • ✔ Run paid ads mentioning TYPO3 (e.g. Google Ads, Facebook campaigns)

If you’re not a Gold+ member and want these rights: Join or upgrade your membership

Why this matters

The TYPO3 name is a trademark. That means we all share the responsibility of keeping it trusted, consistent, and respected — so it continues to grow in value for clients, users, and contributors worldwide. We’ve updated our trademark usage guidelines to make them easy to understand. Please review them if you’re a service provider, agency, or active community member.
