TYPO3 Community Expansion Committee: Activity Update January–July 2025

Categories: Community, Association Created by Daniel Homorodean
During the first half of 2025, the TYPO3 Community Expansion Committee continued its efforts to promote TYPO3 internationally, focusing on institutional adoption, strategic partnerships, and public-sector digital transformation.

The committee has engaged with a range of multilateral and international organizations involved in digital public infrastructure and open-source development, including GovStack, the International Telecom Union (ITU), the German Development Agency (GIZ), and others. These collaborations help to align TYPO3 with broader efforts to support digital transformation using open standards and open-source tools.

Areas of Focus

The committee concentrated on the following core areas:

  • Outreach and relationship-building with stakeholders in the digital governance ecosystem
  • Positioning TYPO3 as a CMS suited for government and institutional use
  • Supporting adoption through targeted training and mentoring
  • Developing structured educational content and onboarding materials

International Representation

The committee contributed to various international events and forums aimed at public-sector digital infrastructure and open-source collaboration. These included conferences, exhibitions, and technical workshops across Europe, Africa, and North America. Notable events included:

Contributions to GovStack

TYPO3 is actively contributing to GovStack, a multi-stakeholder initiative aimed at providing governments with modular, standards-based digital infrastructure, emphasizing open source solutions. TYPO3’s involvement has grown, particularly through contributions to the development of a new Content Management Building Block specification.

Work on the building block has been collaborative, involving assistance from the Drupal Association and the Drupal community. A working group has been established. The first draft of the specification has been finalized and should be published in the next few months.

Learning Materials and Documentation

Progress continues on the TYPO3 Onboarding Curriculum, which provides structured pathways for new developers to learn TYPO3. The curriculum now outlines lesson topics, learning objectives, and links to relevant resources.

Where gaps in documentation exist, new Step-by-Step guides, directly targeting teaching and learning situations, are being developed. More information about the Step-by-Step guides will be published soon.

Global Engagement Highlights

TYPO3 has been introduced or promoted in a number of countries, but Somalia has seen special focus. As part of a GovStack project led by ITU, TYPO3 was used to build several government websites for the country’s government, including the main national portal at www.somalia.gov.so. Local developers received hands-on training and support. To continue the collaboration, a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the TYPO3 Association and the Somali Government.

In other countries, the focus has been on raising awareness, providing guidance on TYPO3’s potential role in public sector digital infrastructure, and contributing to knowledge transfer through coaching and training:

  • Ethiopia
  • Albania
  • Senegal
  • Rwanda
  • Kenya
  • Djibouti
  • Zimbabwe
  • Botswana
  • Dominican Republic
