Why Have a TYPO3 Review Friday?
While the TYPO3 core is relatively stable and already has many talented developers scrutinizing the code base, it doesn’t mean that the CMS is bug free. That’s because any sufficiently complex software program will always have bugs, they're an inevitable byproduct of writing software. There’s no such thing as bug free software, not even in the top league.
Reviewing code is an ongoing task.
The monthly Review Friday is there to make it easier (and more fun) for coders to get in front of bugs they can and want to fix, to reduce the time spent getting bugs in front of them, and to reduce the time they spend fixing them. It’s a whole day devoted to reviewing pending patches in the TYPO3 core list.
Thank You All so Much for Coming!
Once again, the event was a success, even if we didn't have that many patch submissions this time. We’d like to say thanks to each and every one of you. It was great having you here and fun collaborating. Your commitment and dedication to making TYPO3 even better is truly awesome!
This time, we experienced something that reminded us all why we’re so passionate about open source and why we love what we do so much. Shortly after 9 o’clock, a fellow walked into our office who not one of us had ever seen before. TYPO3 is open source software, so people contributing to the core are usually pretty familiar faces, or at least we’ve heard their names before. But here he was, with his equipment under his arm and we didn’t have a clue as to who the heck he was.
Of course we were curious and upon inquiry, he shared his story with us. As Martin Clewing said: “I’ve been working with TYPO3 for many years now and have often used this CMS that is so readily supplied and improved by volunteers. It started getting at me that I was just consuming what others were giving by working on a volunteer basis. So I made contributing to this great CMS my resolution. Recently I read about Review Friday on TYPO3.org and knew that this was my chance to take action. So here I am!”
We spent some time setting up the environment it takes to work on reviewing patches on his system, and it didn’t take long before he’d pushed his very first patch amendment. Congratulations! A big thank also goes out to the company he works for - Hees riconet GmbH, a Silver Member of the TYPO3 Association - for releasing him from his duties in the company to be able to attend Review Friday.
See You on June 1st?
Is writing TYPO3 code or testing software your expertise? Are you a TYPO3 developer and would you like to meet other coders face-to-face more frequently? Or maybe you’re new to the TYPO3 project and would like to test the waters?
We open our office doors every first Friday of the month for a full day of tackling issues in the review queue.
Location: TYPO3 GmbH, Am Wehrhahn 41, 40211 Düsseldorf, Germany
Next date: Friday, June 1st
Time: 9.a.m. to midnight
Goal: Get things done, indulge in that green bar feeling and have a good time!
What to expect
The review process improves the overall quality of the code and is an essential part of the development of TYPO3. Review Friday is open to anyone who wants to help out, and the process is simple. Come along, pick a seat, boot up your laptop, and spend time with us contributing to what we all love so much, TYPO3. There is room for coding, testing, talking and sharing stories. Food and beverages will be taken care of by us.
Sign up via Facebook (link is in the event description) or by contacting Anja Leichsenring via Slack (@maddy). Or just come along to our office in Düsseldorf, like Martin Clewing did. We can’t wait to see you! And do let your friends and co-coders know about this regular event.
