The TYPO3 community is renowned for its vibrant and innovative spirit, and we’re always on the lookout for ways to enhance user experience and system functionality. In this pursuit, we're excited to announce the launch of the TYPO3 Stats Initiative, a fresh endeavor focused on harnessing the power of data to refine our beloved CMS.

Proactive Data Usage

The Stats Initiative has been set up to ensure that the TYPO3 Association receives only limited and anonymized data about TYPO3 instances, balancing the need for insights with stringent privacy standards.

Why This Matters

Our goals with the Stats Initiative are clear and are driven by our commitment to the community:

  • Identifying Friction Points: By understanding where users struggle, we can smooth out these areas for a better user experience.
  • Enhancing Decision-Making: With robust data, decisions can be more informed, leading to more effective updates and features.
  • Understanding Usage: Identifying the most-used features and the impact on various user segments helps tailor our development to actual needs.

The First Steps: MVP and Beyond

The newly formed Stats Initiative met for an initial foundational workshop in Düsseldorf in February 2024 — the result of this workshop was the blueprint for a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). This MVP will be an opt-in extension, allowing TYPO3 administrators to contribute to the initiative without sacrificing performance or security. Importantly, we only collect data that is directly relevant to specific questions formulated beforehand. This approach ensures that data collection is never indiscriminate; it's targeted and meaningful, focusing on real use-cases for example, those identified through the Jobs to be Done interviews by our UX Team and CMS Product Strategy group. The data collected not only serves the broader TYPO3 community but is also made available to the instance managers themselves, enabling them to leverage these insights for their own operational benefits.

We're committed to making this process as open and inclusive as possible. The initiative is set to roll out initially to limited instances, such as partner agencies, to refine the approach before a broader release.
