Today, the TYPO3 community released the first Alpha version of TYPO3 4.7. This marks the start of our journey to the next major release of our CMS: TYPO3 4.7 standards and accessibility.
Today, the TYPO3 community released the first alpha version of TYPO3 4.7. This marks the start of our journey to the next major release of our CMS: TYPO3 4.7 standards and accessibility. Release 4.7.0 will be ready by 24th April 2012. This alpha version is a "developer snapshot" to show the progress so far.
What happened so far?
As there had not been a kick-off meeting for 4.7 development, the release manager Steffen Ritter started contacting individuals and teams that were already working on projects that were planned for inclusion in 4.7.
The Skype meetings introduced by the release team of 4.5 (Ernesto Baschny and Steffen Kamper) proved to have been fruitful for both the release team and the community and we naturally decided to keep them up. These meetings are held on a weekly basis together with the TYPO3 community manager (Ben van 't Ende) and the core team leaders as well as with our former Release Manager Xavier Perseguers.
Now 4.7 is on its way and we decided to include breaking changes as soon as possible. This is why following breaking changes are already part of this alpha1 release:
- Many deprecated functions, calls and configuration options have been removed. If you are using 4.5 or 4.6 and have entries in your deprecation log, you definitely will have a problem on upgrading.
- A minor change which prohibited the usage of PHP 5.4 hasbeen merged.
As we are releasing the "government package", the Frontend-accessibility improvements are included in this release. These Accessibility-Improvments mainly concentrates on full-featured HTML5 content rendering.
In addition some smaller APIs had been introduced like a new set of interfaces for building collections with TYPO3.
Another useful feature is, the speedup of indexed_search on MySQL: TYPO3 4.7 Alpha1 ships another extension "indexed_search_mysql" which modifies indexed_search to use the Fulltext Index features of MySQL which results in a major speed improvement.

For the first alpha an introduction package was built, which allows testing the new features right away on a fresh installation.
In addition the new government package is available as well as Alpha1 package (currently only in german).
Experienced users can of course opt to upgrade an existing installation to the new 4.7 Alpha1 version, but keeping in mind that this is still a snapshot of our development so far, and more changes and fixes will be included in further releases.
