TYPO3 Community February 2012

Categories: Community Created by ben van 't ende
The month of February had many TYPO3 enthusiasts heading to the slopes of Crap Sogn Gion, Laax, Switzerland to enjoy the fine powder under excellent weather conditions. Discussions and decisions made at the Snowboard Tour are still echoing in the month of March.

TYPO3 Certification

The TYPO3 Certification Team is proud to announce that they have reached the mark of 1000 TYPO3 Certified Integrators.

Snowboard Tour 2010

The TYPO3 community gathered once again for the 11th iteration of the legendary snowboard and ski event in Laax, Switzerland. Highlights on the slopes were the Burton European Open and the Radical Testing Day. The guys from Radical equipped the TYPO3 geeks exclusively with their fine hand-crafted innovative boards and skis.

Off-piste there were a lot of coding related events and discussions of which we can still hear the echoes.

TYPO3 version 4.7

File Abstraction Layer

The file abstraction layer is one of the most anticipated features for TYPO3 in the last few years. Work on FAL started one and a half year ago. During workshops at the Snowboard Tour it became obvious that FAL is not stable enough to include in TYPO3 version 4.7 yet. The release team decided to delay FAL's inclusion until the next major release.

Beta 1 release

At the Snowboard Tour the first Beta release was published, appropriately heralding feature freeze from the cold Swiss slopes. Some external libraries were upgraded, TYPO3 now works UTF-8-only internally and some backend modules have been migrated to Extbase. Besides this new stuff about 160 bugs have been fixed since the release of 4.6 in October 2011.

FLOW3 and Phoenix

Work on Phoenix and FLOW3 continued full scale, only slowed down a little by T3BOARD12 at the end of the month and in the middle the month, the team released FLOW3 1.0.3.

The user base of Phoenix continues to grow and the website for T3CON12 – Québec has been set up using Phoenix. Work on the Typoscript rendering concept continued and was presented at the Snowboard Tour. Twitter bootstrap was discussed and is a very likely candidate for inclusion in Phoenix. The V4 branch is considering the same. The snowboard tour participants had the chance to see a presentation on some impressive improvements to the Aloha editor used in Phoenix.

FLOW3 work for February consisted mainly of re-factorings and major clean up in the MVC stack of FLOW3. Something that is close to being publicly announced is a Form API for FLOW3.

The team worked a lot on documentation, translation handling and brainstormed about possible topics for the T3DD12 in Munich after which a number of workshop proposals were handed in.

General Assembly of the TYPO3 Association

On February 3-4 the Board and the Steering Committee met for the last time in Basel in this combination for the General Assembly. The main purpose of the meeting is to finalise the budget for 2012. The TYPO3 Association will continue in a restructured form and largely democratically chosen from the members.

All information like agenda, budget for 2012 and the protocol of the meeting can be found on the TYPO3 Association's website.

New Community Teams

At the GA mentioned above the Steering Committee was officially dissolved. Until this GA the TYPO3 Association had the Board and SC as official bodies. The Steering Committee discussed many topics that arose in the community, but was like the Board not democratically chosen. To provide transparency and have a democratic process in the TYPO3 Association a Business Control Committee and an Expert Advisory Board where elected by the members of the TYPO3 Association. This combination will have it's first meeting in Düsseldorf on March 19-20. Financial, legal and budget issues seem to be tackled in a democratic way like this. With this whole re-organisation it also became apparent that there needs to be more governance in the community. Until now there was no central body to talk about strategy or even determine strategy and no place where the current active teams get together and discuss what is going on. We have lot of teams that have meetings on a regular basis and report about that as well.

Events

T3AKADEMIE took place in Munich this year on February 10 and 11. T3AKADEMIE is organised by Marit AG. There were many quality presentations and interesting discussions during these days. Sven Wolfermann won the award for best presentation with his presentation on Responsive Web design, closely followed by Ingo Schmitt on Fast Web applications. It is really cool to see so more and more events popping up.
